Ford's love for acting grew when she was young. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor fit there. Ford was then able to apply for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993, but she made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
